في صيف عام 1946، وفي الغرفة رقم 7 مكرر، كنت قد وصلت قادماً من مكان قصيّ وقد أهلك البرد والجوع رئتي، بعد أن رحت أتنقل من محطة إلى أخرى، قابضاً بأصابعي على اليد الحديدية لصندوق عسكري، نعشٍ صغيرٍ من خشب التنوب للعشرين سنة الأخيرة من حياتي ذات الأقدام المتآكلة. هنا في مشفى «روكّا» كان الأمر قد صار حقاً لعبة: إما الموت أو الخلاص. لم تك بصحبتي حقائب أخرى، ولم يكن بالصندوق شيء ذو أهمية: مجرد حفنة من الذكريات الجافة، ومسدّس فارغ بين كتابين، وخطابات امرأة مر عليها الزمان.
