يسلط كتاب "حرب بلا نهاية" ضوءا نقديا كاشفا على البواعث والدوافع الكامنة خلف الحرب على الإرهاب، ويستكشف ديفيد كين الحالات التي لم يعد فيها كسب الحرب غاية مطلوبة لذاتها بل كثيرا ما وفرت الحرب غطاء لمخططات سياسية واقتصادية أوسع، تغدو فيها تقوية العدو إما عملية غير ذات صلة أو نسقاً إيجابياً مفيداً.
كما يبتكر ديفيد كين إطاراً راديكالياً لتحليل مشروع الحرب التي لا تنتهي، حيث يشير إلى ممارسة العنف ذاته بذاته، وتمثل الحرب على الإرهاب أحدث استطالة لمشروع حرب باردة.
كما يعتمد الكتاب على الاستقصاء الذي أجراه المؤلف على أرض الواقع في السودان وسيراليون وشمال العراق وعدد آخر من أماكن الصراع.
