إدوارد بيدج ميتشل: كاتبُ قصصٍ ومحرِّرٌ أمريكي، وُلِد في عام ١٨٥٢، ويُعَد من الشخصيات الرئيسية في تطوُّر أدب الخيال العلمي. وُصِف لاحقًا بأنه «العملاق المفقود في أدب الخيال العلمي الأمريكي»؛ إذ كتب الكثيرَ من قصص الخيال العلمي في الفترة الممتدة من سبعينيات القرن التاسع عشر إلى تسعينياته، وجميعها تقريبًا نُشِرت في صحيفة «ذا صن» اليومية في نيويورك، دونَ الكشف عن هُويته.
ضمَّت كتاباته العديدَ من التنبُّؤات التكنولوجية والاجتماعية التي كانت جريئةً وسابقةً لعصرها، ومن بين ذلك التدفئة الكهربائية، وتجميد البشر مؤقتًا، وآلة السَّفَر عبر الزمن، والسَّفَر بسرعةٍ أكبر من سرعة الضوء، وحق الاقتراع للنساء الأمريكيات، والتزاوُج بين الأعراق. وتشتمل قصصُه الخيالية على كلِّ ما هو غامض وغريب، بما في ذلك الأشباح، والشيطان، والماسوشية، وتحوُّل الأجسام غير الحية إلى كائناتٍ حية، وغير ذلك كثير.

نَجحَ الطَّبِيبُ جوكين في فَصلِ التَّوءمَينِ داو، فأَصْبحَ ياخيئيل شابًّا مُحترَمًا يَعملُ في طَرْقِ الصَّفِيح، وأَصْبحَ أَخُوه جيكوب طائِشًا ومُتهوِّرًا يَعملُ في التَّهرِيب. ولاحَظَ الطَّبِيبُ أنَّه عَلى الرَّغمِ مِنَ انْفِصالِ التَّوءمَينِ فقد ظلَّتْ بَينَهُما رَابِطةُ تَخاطُرٍ عَصبيٍّ غَيرُ مَرئِية؛ فقَدْ كانَ مِنَ المُمكِنِ مَعرفةُ مَتَى يَكونُ جيكوب مُتورِّطًا في المَتاعِبِ بمُجردِ مُراقَبةِ تَصرُّفاتِ ياخيئيل. في هَذهِ الأَوْقاتِ يَكونُ ياخيئيل مُضطرِبًا؛ فيَضرِبُ الصَّفيحَ بنَفادِ صَبْرٍ ووَجهٍ عابِسٍ مُتجهِّم. وعِندَما يَموتُ جيكوب أَثناءَ شِجارٍ بَينَ مَجمُوعةٍ مِنَ السُّكارَى، يَتحوَّلُ ياخيئيل إلى نَذلٍ مُحتالٍ ومُتهتِّك. لقَدْ تَلبَّسَتْ رُوحُ جيكوب بجَسدِ ياخيئيل واستَحوذَتْ عَلى رُوحِهِ وقَهرَتْها. فتُرَى مَاذا سيَكونُ مَصِيرُه في النِّهاية؟ وهَلْ يُمكِنُ أنْ يَنجُوَ مِن تِلكَ المَأْساة؟
