تتموضع شخصية الراوي/الكاتب الدكتور خالد المانع في المتن الروائي الموسوم بـ "جنون الحكمة" الذي عمل على تحديد أبعاده الفلسفية وخصائصه الدلالية، وتتبع تلوينات لفظة "الجنون"، و"الحكمة"، عبر المقاطع التي وردت في سياق الرواية ليبقي القارئ في إطار تساؤلي عن علاقة الحكمة بالجنون؟ ويجيب عليها في المتن السردي من خلال تعريف القارئ وبطريقة مباشرة ببطل قصته مساعد الذي التقاه حينما ركب الطائرة في طريق العودة إلى الوطن بعد حضور مؤتمر طبي في شيكاغو، وجلس إلى جانبه رجل هادئ ووقور تفوح منه رائحة النظافة.. والابتسامة لا تفارق وجهه. سيخبره مساعد عن مجموعة كتب تحمل مضامينها كيفية العلاج النفسي بواسطة الأحلام، وعن نظريته العظيمة، التي اكتشفها في أحد أحلامه التي يتحكم بها، وكيف أن الغضب والإحساس بالذل إثناء دخوله أميركا دفعاه لتحضير حلمٍ يساعده على تخطي المعاناة، كما أخبره عن فقدان حبيبته التي اختطفها البحر منه.. والأهم أنه أخبره عن حلمه "حلمت بأني معها في جنة من البساتين المليئة بالورود والرياحين، كانت جميلة، مرحة، تقفز بين الورود، وضحكتها تدغدغ قلبي..." وبعد انقطاع عنه لمدة محدودة عرف الراوي أن مساعد قد دخل بإرادته وأحلامه، نفقاً يجعله كئيباً ومدمناً على الخيال والأحلام، وأنها سعادته التي لا يريد أن يستفيق منها... تتوالى الأحداث في الرواية ليكتشف الراوي أن ما وراء قصة مساعد وأحلامه أشياءً لا تحمد عقباها وأنه ذئب في صورة إنسان.
