يتألف هذا الكتاب من مجموعة قصصية مكونة من خمس قصص فقط، أولاها أطولها، وهي التي أعطت المجموعة اسمها (ثقب في جدار الزمن).
يجيد الكاتب اختيار زمن الأحداث فيها، وفي استعراض غرابة ذلك الزمن ومبلغ الانسجام في إيقاعه وترابطه، وفي تبيان الصورة التي يتخيلها في ظل تقنيات قادمة بالغة السطوة مبهرة الفاعلية، في طلاوة لغوية جيدة، تنبئ بأشكال منطقية مدروسة للمستقبل تتخللها فصوله دون مساس بالجوهر العلمي. ولا نلمس وقائع محددة في قصته الثانية (الخروج من الزنزانة)، ولا أسماء ولا أماكن معروفة، وإنما هي تتابع أحداث من التصارع والتعدي الذي يسبق طوفان الحرب النووية، ويصور ما يتخيله لأعمق مأساة عدوان قابيل على أخيه هابيل بكل محتواها من أطماع وشرور لكن في العصر الحديث.
وما احتمله الكاتب في قصته السابقة يحدث حقيقة في قصته اللاحقة (وجوه للحلم) لكن طريق الفاجعة يفرش أحياناً بالورد، في عبارات حانية تذيب جفاف العلم، وتمنح نظرة وجد أو همسة هيام تجعل القلب يرقص منتشياً.
ويتساءل عن استطاعة الإنسان الانفلات بعيداً في عمق الكون إلى عوالم جديدة، ليجيب عنه بقصته (النداء الأزلي) التي تدور حول زوجة تبحث عن زوجها بين أجرام كوكبية قصية.
ويكتمل الحلم الكبير في القصة الأخيرة (الأشباح) إذ تستخدم صواريخها العملاقة لتترك الأرض وتحط على سطح كوكب آخر، تشهد معه تاريخ ذلك الكوكب الذي يحكي قصة الحياة ذاتها على كوكبنا الأرضي. والمستقبل الذي لم يجئ بعد. من خلال مدينة فاضلة إكسيرها الحب إكسير التوازن الحضاري فيها، مما يجعل العربي يحلم باستعادة مجده الغابر.
