"هذه المرة لم يتبقَّ للسجناء شيء من مؤونة الصليب الأحمر، ألبسة لا تلائم مقاساتنا، جوارب للشتاء القارس، وملاءات قليلة... هذا كل ما فضل عن المدنيين وضعها المعسكر في مكان يبعد عنّا أكثر من مئة متر، قال لنا مدير السجن، كَريكَا: - ليس من أخلاقي أن أفاضل بين السجناء، هي هناك، تسابقوا إليها.
كانت أولى تبعات هذا التسابق أن يزرع الحقد بيننا، أغلب السجناء مرضى وكهول، وهم أحوجنا إلى هذه البقايا، كانت أسمالهم اهترأت ليس من فرط الإستعمال فحسب، كان القمل قد نهشها... وكان علينا أن نتسابق.
كنا نعرف مكرهم، ولكن الحاجة هي التي دفعت بنا إلى الجري في الطريق الذي سطّرته إشارتهم، الشمس عبودية، تهرق لظىّ حاراً على رؤوسنا، كأنه يوم الحشر، الأكوام تبدو بعيدة... كنا نجري، مخلفين ذيلاً عملاقاً من الغبار الرملي، كأنه لوحش لا يعيش إلا في تندوف.
لا تنتظري أن أكون قد وصلت وسبقت أحد الجنود... هؤلاء مدرَّبون، أما أنا فقد وصلت الأخير، وكل حصتي كانت فولاراً أزرق كذاك الذي كنت تفضلين، ولكن لم تكن به رائحتك... لقد جريت لأحظى بنصف المتعة".
