عن عبد الله بن عباس - من طريق سعيد بن جبير - قال : لما نزلت : (وأنذر عَشِيرَتَكَ الْأَقْرَبِينَ وَرَهْطَكَ مِنْهُمُ الْمُخْلَصِينَ) خرج النبي ﷺ حتى صعد الصفاء فهتف: (يا صباحاه فاجتمعوا إليه، فقال: أرأيتكم لو أخبرتكم أن خيلا تخرج بسفح هذا الجبل أكنتم مصدقي ؟ قالوا : ما جربنا عليك كذبا . قال: فإني نذير لكم بين يدي عذاب شديد) فقال أبو لهب تبا لك، إنما جمعتنا لهذا؟ ثم قام، فنزلت هذه السورة: تبت يدا أبي لَهَبٍ وَقَد تَبَّ) .)
عن عبد الله بن عباس - من طريق عكرمة - قال : ما كان أبو لهب إلا من كفار قريش ما هو حتى خرج من الشعب حين تمالات قريش، حتى حصرنا في الشعب وظاهرهم، فلما خرج أبو لهب من الشعب لقي هند ابنة عتبة بن ربيعة حين فارق قومه، فقال: يا ابنة عتبة هل نصرت اللات والعزى؟ قالت: نعم، فجزاك الله خيرا، يا أبا عتبة قال: إن محمدًا يعدنا أشياء لا تراها كائنة، يزعم أنها كائنة بعد الموت، فماذا وضع في يدي ؟! ثم نفخ في يديه، ثم قال : تبا لكما، ما أرى فيكما شيئًا مما يقول محمد فنزلت: (تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبي لَهَبٍ) . قال ابن عباس: فحصرنا في الشعب ثلاث سنين، وقطعوا عنا الميرة، حتى إن الرجل بنا ليخرج بالنفقة فما يبايع حتى يرجع، حتى هلك منا من هلك
