إن علم التفسير هو من أشرف العلوم الشرعية وأجلها فهو العلم الذي من خلاله يُفهَم كتاب الله عز وجل، الذي هو أشرف الكلام وأعظمه، ولذا فقد اهتم علماء المسلمين سلفاً وخلفاً بهذا العلم الشريف، فكان من أبرز هؤلاء العلماء الحافظ ابن كثير رحمه الله، فقد أضحى تفسيره-بحق-من أهم التفاسير إن لم يكن أهمها.
هذا التفسير اجتمعت فيه ميزات كثيرة لم يجتمع في تفسير آخر. فقد جمع ابن كثير فيه بين التفسير والتأويل والرواية والدراية، مع العناية التامة بذكر الأسانيد، واستيفاء الآيات في الموضوع الأول، وتفسير القرآن بالقرآن، مع حسن البيان وعدم التعقيد، وعدم التشعيب في المسائل والاستطراد الكثير.
ولأهمية هذا التفسير كان لا بد من توليته اهتماماً كبيراً، والاعتناء بإخراجه إخراجاً منهجياً معاصراً وكان عمله كالتالي: مقابلة التفسير مقابلة كاملة على عدة طبعات، تفصيل وترقيم النص بشكل يسهل على القارئ قراءته، عزو الآيات القرآنية، وضع الآيات القرآنية المفسرة باللون الأحمر، ثم وضع جميع الآيات القرآنية ضمن أقواس مزهرة، هذا إذا لم تكن القراءة شاذة، فإذا كانت القراءة شاذة وضعها ضمن قوس تنصيصي إشارة لشذوذها، ضبط متون الأحاديث وأسانيدها من مصادرها الحديثية، ضبط الأعلام والأنساب والأماكن والبلدان من مصادرها.
