إن هذا الكتاب يلقى الضوء على ذلك النشاط الإنسانى الذى نسميه بالفن ، من حيث كونه نشاطًا إبداعيًا أو تذوقًا جماليًا لما تنتجه البشرية من أعمالٍ فنية ، ولعل خير ما كتب فى هذا الموضوع ما جاء فى كتاب هربرت ريد Herbert Read . ثم قام مؤلف الكتاب بمعالجة الموضوع من زاوية علمية جعلته رائدًا فى هذا المضمار إذ إنه أضاف جديداً إلى منهج التفكير الجمالى.
رأينا أن نقدم للقارئ العربى موضوعاً من أهم الموضوعات التى تلقى الضوء على ذلك النشاط الإنسانى الذى نسميه بالفن، من حيث كونه نشاطاً إبداعياً أو تذوقاً جمالياً لما تنتجه البشرية من أعمال فنية، ولعل خير ما كتب فى هذا الموضوع ما جاء فى كتاب "التربية عن طريق الفن" بعنوان "تعريف الفن"، ومؤلف هذا الكتاب هو هربرت ريدHerbert Reard.
ولقد شغل هذا الموضوع أذهان الفلاسفة منذ فجر التفكير الإنسانى، غير أن هذا التفكير كان يتسم عادة بالصبغة الميتافيزيقية، ولكننا وجدنا أن مؤلف هذا الكتاب قد عالج الموضوع من زاوية علمية جعلته رائداً فى هذا المضمار إذ أنه أضاف جديداً إلى منهج التفكير الجمالى.
وهذا ما حدا بنا إلى نقل هذا الاتجاه الجديد إلى اللغة العربية راجين أن يكون لبنة متواضعة فى بناء صرح المكتبة العربية فى مجال علم الجمال والبحوث الفنية.
ونأمل أن يفيد من كتابنا هذا المهتمون بالفنون عامة وعلم الجمال خاصة سواء منهم الباحثون، أو المشتغلون بالفنون، أو القائمون بتدريسها، أو الطلبة فى مختلف المعاهد.
