قام الإنسان القديم برسم الحيوانات و عناصر الطبيعة على جدران كهوفه ولكن الإنسان القديم كان يقوم بوصف و رسم الطبيعة و عناصرها دون محاولة فهم هذه الطبيعة وفهم علاقة عناصرها مع بعضها البعض ولعل أول ما يلفت النظر في تاريخ علوم الحياة انتشار الجماجم البشرية التي تم ثقبها في الكهوف في كافة أنحاء العالم , مع انتشار أداة ثقب الجماجم trephination التي بدأ الإنسان القديم في استخدامها و استمر ذلك الاستخدام لفتراتٍ طويلة حتى أن أداة ثقب الجماجم و عمليات ثقب الجماجم كانت واسعة الانتشار في أوروبا خلال عصر النهضة Renaissance( القرن السادس عشر ) و ذلك لعلاج الاضطرابات العقلية وبذلك فقد كانت عملية ثقب الجمجمة أول عمليةٍ جراحية عرفها الإنسان و فق ما يتوفر لدينا من بيانات وكانت هذه العملية تتم دون تعقيم و دون تخدير و كانت الغاية منها فتح ثقب في الجمجمة قطره سنتيمترين اثنين أو أكثر و الغرض من فتح هذا الثقب كان السماح للأرواح الشريرة بالخروج من الجمجمة وهو ما يدعى بالاصطلاح الطبي الحديث : تفريج ضغوط ما تحت الجافية relieving subdural pressure , وعلى عكس ما نتخيل فإن المراجع القديمة تقول بأن نسبة نجاح هذه العملية كانت جيدة و أن صحة المرضى العقليين كانت تتحسن إلى حدٍ كبير بعد إجراء هذا العمل الجراحي لهم وفقاً لتلك المراجع ..
