في منتصف القرن الثامن الميلادي ولأسباب اعتبرت تكتيكية أكثر منها دينية اعتنق الخزر الديانة اليهودية ليكونوا بمنأى عن الصراع الدائر بين القوتين العظمتين ـ الإسلامية والبيزانطية ـ آنذاك، حيث استطاع الخزر تكوين شبه امبراطورية تخصهم في منطقة القفقاز وهذا هو محور هذه الدراسة.
