كتاب - تاريخ جيجلي - لي شارل فيرو ويعد أقدم كتاب يخصص لجيجل. وقد أصبح المصدر الذي يستقي منه المعلومات كل من أراد التحدث عن جيجل خاصة الذين يكتبون بالفرنسية، وهو كتاب تختلط فيه الخرافة بالواقع، والأسطورة بالحقيقة والخيال بالعلم.
وهو على ما يشتمل عليه من أحكام جاهزة ومبالغات كثيرة وافتراضات قد تجانب الصواب في بعض المواقع وفي بعض المناحي، إلا أنه يعتبر أقدم كتاب وضع عن منطقة جيجل، وبالرغم من أنه لم يذكر فيه شيئا أكثر مما ذكر عن جيجل لدى المؤرخين القدامى والرحالة العرب والرومان والإغريق. إلا أن القارئ يجد نفسه أمام عمل كتابي قد تناول هذه الناحية بنوع من التفصيل لم يسبقه إليه أحد، وبنوع من المنهجية والإنتقائية في اختيار الأحداث وترتيبها وإهمال وطمس البعض الآخر منها، موظفا في عمله هذا نصوص وأقوال من سبقوه من العرب وغيرهم كابن خلدون وغيره، مسهبا في الوصف الدقيق للتضاريس الجغرافيا للجهة، محاولا تقديم بعض التفاسير لعادات وتقاليد واخلاق السكان التي تخدم الوجود الاستيطاني للاستعمار وتبرر ادعاءاته وأفعاله واحتلاله.
