ترسل تركيا إشارات متناقضة، ففي حين أن حكومتها التي تُعرف بأنها "إسلامية معتدلة" تؤيد الانضمام إلى أوروبا، يُظهر جيشها "المُغربَن " و "العلماني" تحفظاً شديداً حيال ذلك. تمتلك البلاد مؤسسات ديمقراطية شكلية، ولكنّ سياستيها الداخلية والخارجية تُمليان من قبل مجلس للأمن القومي،مؤلفٍ بشكل أساسي من عسكريين. صادقت على المواثيق الأوربية والدولية الخاصة بحقوق الإنسان والأقليّات، و لكن سجلها بهذا الخصوص خلال العقدين الأخيرين من أكثر العقود إثارة للقلق. ومع أنها منفتحة على العالم، تظل محكومة بهاجس الحصن المحاصر الذي يتهدد أمنه باستمرار أعداءٌ من الداخل و الخارج.
إن التفصيل التاريخي لهذا الكتاب يسير على المستوى نفسه مع قراءة في "حبكة" بعض المسائل، كالمسألة الكردية، والمعارضة العَلَويّة والعنف وكذلك الاعتراضات الصادرة عن الحقل الديني.
كما يناقش الكتاب في جزء أساسي منه حركة مصطفى كمال "أتاتورك" والتي يعتبرها البعض الحركة الوحيدة للتحديث و العلمنة، لا بل وللدمقرطة في العالم الإسلامي. وهذه الحركة هي التي أسست لتاريخ تركيا الحديث وجعلت من العسكر القوة الرئيسية الحامية لوحدة "الأمة التركية"، فتحوَّل إلى أداة قمع، وأعاق أي تطور للحياة السياسية التركية على مدى سنوات طويلة.
تركيا اليوم أمام مقترق طرق كبير، إذ نشهد تحولاً في توجهاتها، وخاصة تجاه العالم العربي، كما تشهد نوعاً من التراجع لدور الجيش، وتشهد أيضاً نهاية لكل الأحزاب "الكمالية" التي صارت على الهامش تماماً. ولهذه الأسباب يكتسب الكتاب أهمية خاصة.
