وأسفل السحابة التي جللت الأرض بما يشبه وشاح من دخان تغطي سطح الأرض بأشياء ساكنة هامدة لا حصر لها .. كانت الأشياء الممددة هنا وهناك ، وفي كل ركن ، وفوق كل سفح وكل تلة ، وتلك التي تطفو على سطح المياه الداكنة ، مياه البحار والمحيطات وكل نوع من المسطحات المائية ، أو التي غلبها ثقل وزنها فغاصت في الأعماق واستقرت كصخرة عملاقة على رمال القاع السوداء ، لعدم نفاذ الضوء إلي تلك الأعماق البعيدة ، كانت كلها لكائنات حية .. أو لكائنات كانت حية منذ أيام أو ربما ساعات .. كانت تلك الميتات تنتمي لكل الفصائل الحيوانية المعروفة ، طيور وزواحف ، كائنات رخوة وفقاريات ومدرعات مخيفة هائلة الجرم ، وحتى الحشرات تساقطت ميتة هنا بأعداد مهولة .. الموت في كل مكان .. والحياة خجلة تتواري بعيدا تاركة أخاها الأكبر ، وليس عدوها ، الموت ينشر ظله هنا ويفرض سطوته .. موت في كل صوب وأغلب أنواع وأجناس المخلوقات قد بادت أو كادت !
موت عظيم وانقراض هائل وفناء شامل .. التعفن والتحلل يزحفان على الأرض والصمت يجلل كل شيء !
