قصص "روبرت هيتشنز" تحفل بطابع الجو الشرقي، الذي يحسه القارئ المتابع لأعماله. وفي هذه الرواية (بيللا دونا) التي تجري أحداثها، على أرض مصر، يعكس المؤلف وجهة النظر الغربية تجاه الشرقيين عموماً والعرب منهم خصوصاً. وهي تكشف صورة الشرقي من منظار الغرب المتحامل على كل ما يتناقض أو يتعارض مع قيمه ومبادئه.
وبطل هذه الرواية هو "محمود بارودي المصري الأسمر" وأدرك نيجل أنه لا بد من رجال الأعمال المجدين إذ لم يكن فيه شيء من طباع الشرقي الكسول الذي يحب أن يجلس في الشمس وينتظر مشيئة الله، وإن يملأ الأعوام بالأحلام والأماني، كما أدرك أنه هادئ الطبع، ثاقب الفكر، مفعم بتلك الكفاية التجارية الملحوظة التي تميز اليوناني الحديث".
وتدور بين هذا الرجل الشرقي الناجح والغني جداً وبين السيدة "أرماين" بطلة الرواية علاقة غرامية تفقد معها المرأة في النهاية قدرتها على ضبط النفس والتماسك، ولم تعد قادرة على لعب دور الزوجة المخلصة لزوجها (ينجل). وأخيراً تستفيق هذه السيدة على المأساة، فقد تخلى عنها (بارودي) بعد أن اعترفت لزوجها بكل شيء. "لم ينتظر المرأة بعد ذلك شيئاً، إذ أدركت أن هذه إشارة النهاية.. نهاية المأساة.. فأسرعت تشق طريقها إلى بوابة الحديقة، وتندفع منها إلى الطريق المهجور وراءها، ثم تختفي بين أطواء الظلام... وانطلقت على غير هدى متجهة نحو التلال البعيدة التي تحمي صحراء العرب".
