أحداث هذه الرواية تصور وبأسلوب أقرب ما يكون إلى الواقع أحداث اغتصاب فلسطين، حيث تشكل المادة التاريخية عنصراً أساسياً في الرواية التي نجح مؤلفها في رسم معاناة جيل عاصر تلك الأحداث، وأدى ذلك إلى تبلور وعيه، ورفضه لواقعه المؤلف فانتفضى عليه وما زال يواجه آثار ونتائج تلك النكبة التي حدثت في أيار (مايو) 1948
اتكأت رواية فيصل حوراني هذه على الأحداث التي داهمت فلسطين في العام 1948م، إلا أنها أشادت عالمها الخاص بالاعتماد على المخيلة الروائية في المقام الأول، وهكذا رسمت (بير الشوم) صورة نابضة بشتى الألوان والإيقاعات لأشخاص عديدين وعلاقاتهم بعضهم ببعض. ولئن توزع النص بين المستويين التاريخي والروائي، فإن هذا التوزع، كما وصفه النقد الجاد، منح الرواية، ظفرنا بنص تجرد من سلطة السرد الجافة، وأطلق حركة الحدث التاريخي لتعبر عن نفسها في سياق روائي.
نشرت "بير شوم" أول مرة في العام 1979م، ويسعدنا أن ننشرها في طبعة جديدة جهدنا كي نجنبها أخطاء الطبعات السابقة.
