صُنّفت الرواية على أنّها تندرج ضمن أدب الواقعيّة السحريّة. سنتابع رحلة يوجين الذي يهجر أملاكه وحياته المرفّهة، حيث يخرج بحثا عن حبيبته، لكنّه وإذ كان ينشد لقاءها، إذ به يبلغ قرية باراديسيوس التي تخلو من النّساء والأطفال، ولا يعيش داخلها سوى بعض القرويين المحطّمين نفسيّا، والممنوعين من المغادرة. يحاول يوجين مساعدتهم لنيل الخلاص فيتعرّف لأوّل مرّة على ذاته ويكتشف نفسه من خلال التأمّل في مأساة القرويين. يؤكّد النقّاد على أنّ هذه الرواية كُتبت بمقاييس الروايات العالمية.
