هذا الكتاب نص أصيل من نصوص الأضداد، ومؤلفه هو أبو عُبيد القاسم بن سلام الخزاعي الهروي المتوفي سنة 224ه، وهو باب من أبواب معجمه" الغريب المصنّف" الذي قسمه إلى أقسام كبيرة، سمّى كل واحد منها "كتاباً" وقسم الكتاب إلى ما يتفرع إليه من موضوعات، أطلق على كل واحد منها "باباً". والأضداد بابٌ من أبواب المعجم، وهو يضم نوعاً من الألفاظ تتعرف إلى معنيين متضادّين، ولم يورد أبو عبيد مواد الباب مرتبةً على حروف المعجم، وإنما جاء بها كيفما اتفق على غير تنظيم، فالناهل، ثم السدفة، ثم طلعتُ، وهكذا؛ مشبهاً في ذلك اغلب من ألف في الأضاد.
ولأهمية هذا المعجم للمكتبة اللغوية العربية دأب أ.د. محمد حسين آل ياسين على دراسته وتحقيقه بالإعتماد على صور أربع نسخ نفيسة، متباعدة المصادر منها إيطالية وتركية وتونسية وعراقية، ويعود تاريخ نسخها إلى أكثر من ألف سنة مضت. ومن هنا يدرك القارىء مبلغ الفرادة وندرة الخصوصية، لا في كتب الأضداد، أو كتب اللغة فحسب، وإنما على مستوى المخطوطات المحققة بعامة.
قدم الدكتور آل ياسين لهذه الدراسة بمقدمة ذكر فيها سيرة أبا عبيد ومكانته العلمية، وذكر مؤلفاته مخطوطةً ومطبوعة، ووقف على معجمه الكبير "الغريب المصنّف"، وتكلم عن كتاب الأضداد المنسوب إليه، ثم عرض النسخ المخطوطة ودرس باب الأضداد لغوياً، وتناول منهج أبي عبيد وختم بتقديم نماذج أبي عبيد في التأليف ومعالجة المواد اللغوية، وختم بتقديم نماذج مصورة من النسخ المخطوطة.
