لا تقتصر رواية "إيواء" في كونها رحلة بين الفيافي والصحارى بعيداً عن وعثاء المُدن، بل تتجاوز ذلك لتشكّل رحلة رؤيوية إبداعية تنطلق من الذات/ الكاتبة لتطول تسجيلاتها العالم. إنها كتاب مفتوح يتقصى صانعها الروائي المبدع عمر الشحّي مظاهر الحياة العصرية بكل ما فيها من زيف وتفكك اجتماعي وأمراض، ليقترح في النهاية عبر آلية (الكتابة) مجتمعاً فاضلاً علّه يتجاوز الورق إلى وعي القارئ.
في تظهير الحكاية، يقرر مجموعة من الأصدقاء، وسليمان قائدهم، ترك المدينة والأهل والخلاّن والقيام برحلة إلى "صحراء ليوا"، فيمكثون على فيافيها مدة ثلاثة شهور يفترشون الأرض، ويتوسدون الحصاة، ويعقرون الناقة، وينامون في الخيام وكأنهم قرروا عن قصد العودة إلى زمن مضى، ولكنه ليس كأي زمن؛ إنه الزمن الجميل الذي يفتح الصديق قلبه لصديقه، والشاعر يجود بشعره، والأديب يخبر بما قرأه وكتبه، والفقيه بما تعلّمه؛ فتتخذ الحياة طابع النقاش والسجال والحكمة والفلسفة والإشراق... لتنتهي الرحلة كحلم جميل أقرب إلى الخيال منه إلى الواقع.
يقول الروائي عمر الشحّي عن "إيواء": "... هذا الكتاب قد يكون صورةً لهذا الزمن وضعتها لقارئ اليوم في برواز كي لا ينسى، ولقارئ الغد لكي يتذكر ويعتبر. فجزء منه ليستفيد منه من يستنشق الهواء، ويعتبر منه من سيركل بطن أمّه للخروج للحياة غداً"، وفي مكان آخر يقول المؤلف أيضاً: "... لن أصنف هذا العمل، سأترك للقارئ يصنفه كيف يشاء. فقد يرى فيه رواية، وقد يراه مناقشة للوضع الحالي لمجتمعاتنا، وقد يجد فيه احتفاءً بقصائد العرب ووصاياهم. خيار التصنيف موكول للقارئ وحده".
