رغم كونها باكورة إنتاج الروائي الهولندي الشاب لويس كوبيروس، استطاعت رواية “إيلينه فيره” التي نشرت لأول مرة في العام 1889 أن تجد لنفسها مكانًا وسط عيون الأدب الأوروبي العالمي كروايات فلوبير وتولستوي وإبسن وجين أوستن.تتناول رواية “إيلينه فيره” قصة مأساوية لفتاة عاشت وسط مجتمع لاهاي الراقي، وظهرت حفلات ذلك المجتمع الساهرة وولائم العشاء العامرة لتتعارض مع عزلة بطلة الرواية المتزايدة.يستطيع كوبيروس باهتمامه الفائق بالتفاصيل الصغيرة أن يأخذ بيد القاريء ويلقي به في وسط بحر عائلات فان رات وفان إرليفورت وفرسترايتن ليبدأ السباحة بنفسه، كما ذكر الناقد الأدبي پول بايندينج في دراسته التي نشرت في خاتمة الرواية: إننا عند قراءتنا لرواية “إيلينه فيره” يمكننا أن “نلهو مع الشخصيات على شواطئ شيڤينينجن وكثبانها الرملية، وفي أعماق غابات خيلدرلاند أيضًا؛ نحضر مباريات المصارعة الودية التي تنتهي پولدٍ يقفز كالضفدع على زميله، ونكون هناك تمامًا في القارب الصغير وهو يسير فوق أحد جداول الماء في الريف ويمر بجانب أوراق زنابق الماء الطافية الكثيفة”.يمكن وصف هذه الرواية بأنها رواية نفسية تتبع المذهب الطبيعي الذي يدين به كوبيروس لإميل زولا. نشرت هذه الرواية لأول مرة في هيئة حلقات مسلسلة، وهو ما جعلها تمتليء بحيوية الروايات الفكتورية دون ميلودرامتها.في هذه الرواية، تمكن كوبيروس بقدرته الأدبية العالية أن يصف بدقة متناهية مشاعر البطلة وباقي شخصيات الرواية وغاص في أعماق النفس البشرية، إلى جانب الدخول في بعض المناقشات شبه الفلسفية الممتعة حول موضوعات مثل الإرادة الحرة والقدرية وغيرها.
