هذه الرواية تعتبر ملحمة فى مديح الموت وساراماجو الذى يكتب دون ضغينة أو كراهية حتى أنه يدعونا إلى محبة الموت يضعنا حسه الفكاهى وسخريته اللاذعة منذ بداية الصفحات أمام مفاجأة فانتازية صاعقة: فى اليوم التالى لم يمت أحد، لقد انقطع الموت فى دولة صغيرة -لا اسم لها- وأصبح سكانها لا يموتون ويبقى مريضهم على حاله، وقد يبدو الأمر رائعا في البداية لمن يتوقون إلى الخلود ولكن سرعان ما يوضح "ساراماجو" أنها كارثة تهدد البشرية، فالحكومة لا تستطيع التعامل مع هذا الموقف غير المألوف، ولقد تعثر نظام المعاشات التقاعدية ولم تعد المستشفيات ودور المسنين تفي بالغرض، وأفلست مؤسسات تجهيز الموتى ودفنهم. لقد أثار غياب الموت فوضى ليس لها مثيل ولم تعرفها المجتمعات من قبل وعلى البشرية أن تقبل به كوجه العملة الآخر للحياة، فالمرء لا يستطيع العيش بدون الموت، مع أنه يظهر كتناقض ظاهري للحياة ولكننا في الحقيقة يجب أن نموت لكي تستمر الحياة.
