الأدب ليس صناعة، ولكنه يمارس الحياة، يعيشها، يعاشرها، يستسيغ بعض متعاتها، ويصطلي ببعض نارها. انصرف إلى علم الاقتصاد، فما منعه ذلك عن التلفت حوله في طريقه، إلى الأزهار والأشواك، يتنشق عبير الأولى، كاتماً ألمه من وخزات الثانية، وأراد له قدره أن يعيش مجتمعه وعالمه، وأن يلتقي بأصناف من البشر متأثراً في حساسيته بطباعهم ونزواتهم، وتقاليدهم وبدعهم، وشمائلهم ونقائضهم وكان تأثره يجري قلمي في أويقات فراغه، متخذاً من الكتابة هواية، كهوايات جمع الطوابع وألعاب الرياضة والقعود في الزوايا للتحدث عن الناس. وهو كذلك قد تحدث في كتابه هذا عن الناس، ولكن بقلمه لا بلسانه، ولقرائه لا لجلسائه، وبينه وبين الناس قصص هو يعلمها والقراء يجهلونها، لأنها لم تكن تخرج من طيات نفسه إلى العالم الخارجي. ولم تكن تبرح تنتقل من لبه إلى فؤاده ومن أعصابه إلى ذاكرته... حتى آن لها يوماً أن تنفس عن بعض المكبوت، وأن تكون "مفكرة" جديدة "الجريدة" هي "نافذة العرض" أو "حبل النشر"، واستدام ذلك أكثر من ثلاث سنوات، وجمع ذلك في هذا الكتاب حيث كان حريصاً على أن تكون الصور التي عبر عنها مشفوعة بالخطوط المرسومة، حتى يعيش القارئ وجهاً لوجه أمام الشخصيات التي قدمها، وذلك بالتعاون مع الفنان صلاح جاهين الذي رسم مجموعة من رائعاته حيث اكتملت بذلك رسالة الكتاب. ورأى هذا الكتاب النور لأول مرة في العام 1960 وها هو يخرج الآن في طبعته الثانية 2001 لإمتاع القراء بهذا الكتاب الطريف.
