نجح الروائي النرويجي "إنجفار أمبيورنسون" في أن يرسم شخصيات عمله بعناية شديدة، ويجعلهم يرون نقاط ضعفهم بوضوح، إذ تلقي الرواية الضوء على مخاوف ذوي الإعاقة من العلاقات الاجتماعية المتشابكة والمعقدة، خاصةً علاقتهم بالجنس الآخر. كما تستعرض رأي "إِلينج" المتوحد في الفنون سواء التشكيلية أو المتعلقة بالموسيقى والغناء. ولكن الأهم هو رؤية المجتمع لهم وكيفية تربية ونشأة أطفال مُعاقين ذهنيًّا وحثهم على التعامل مع أطفال الجيران والزملاء بالمدرسة، والمخاطر التي يواجهونها من جراء ذلك.
تعرض الرواية لحياة شخصين، اجتازا معًا مراحل العلاج في مركز تأهيل نفسي حكومي، وفر لهما شقة ومصروفًا شهريًّا، لمواجهة متطلبات الحياة، وعيّن عليهما مشرفًا، يتابع سلوكهما من بعيد، ليتدخل في الوقت المناسب إذا ما تطلب الأمر، ولكن قبل أن ينبهر القارئ بتلك الحكومة التي تمنح مرضاها النفسيين شققًا وأموالاً، يكتشف أن هناك أيضًا العديد من الناس الذي يعيشون تحت الكباري، وأن شابًّا يعاني من أمراض نفسية كان وراء سلسلة من الاغتصاب الوحشي بالمدينة.
