الكتاب ضمّنه المؤلف خلاصات استخرجها من متون ما يربو على سبعة آلاف صفحة تضمنتها (موسوعة) معجم “شمس العلوم” للمؤرخ نشوان بن سعيد الحميري.
قسم المؤلف كتابه الجديد إلى ستة أقسام: الأعلام، المواضع، نبات اليمن والثياب والحيوان، لغة أهل اليمن، ما قال بيمانيته المحققون، وبعض ما ورد في أهل اليمن..
بالإضافة إلى “تكملة” خاصة باللغة تضمنت ثلاثة أقسام: عامي فصيح، بين الفصحى والمسند، وأخيراً “في بعض الصيغ”. وأشار الهيال إلى أنه كان ينبغي أن يكون عمله مقصورا على ما كتب نشوان في معجمه لينقل للقارئ صورة اليمن كما جاءت في المعجم وحسب، مستدركا أن تعليقات محققي المعجم، وهم ثلاثة من العلماء المؤرخين أصحاب المؤلفات النافعة، كانت مفيدة، لهذا أوردها ولم يتصرف فيها “احتراما لجهودهم القيمة”. وأضاف إنه لم يركن في كتابه هذا إلى فهارس الموضوعات التي أعدها محققو الكتاب، بل قام بجمع مادة كتابه من موسوعة “شمس العلوم” اعتماداً على جهده الخاص.
