كتاب الوثنية والإسلام للمؤلف الهندي ك.مادو هوبانيكار الكتاب بأسمه الهندي بعنوان "الثعبان والهلال"و العنوان الفرعي للكتاب هو "تاريخ الإمبراطوريات الزنجية في غرب إفريقية" ، ولكن تم تغير الأسم لأن عنواناً عربياً بهذه الصيغة قد يجعل من المتعذر على القارئ العربي للوهلة الاولى فهم مقصد الكتاب لذلك استخدم عنوان أكثر دلالة على مقصده وهو "الوثنية والإسلام"ومن اجل المزيد من الإيضاح فإن الثعبان يكاد يكون قاسماً مشتركاً في غالب الديانات الوثنية الإفريقية. فالإفريقيون تنتشر بينهم فكرة أن أرواح الأسلاف تسكن الحيوان: من ذلك الزولو الذين يقولون بان أرواح الأسلاف تسكن الأفاعي، ولذا فهم لايقتلونها. ويتناول الكتاب بين ثناياه تاريخ دخول الإسلام والدولة الإسلامية التي قامت في غرب أفريقيافي "غاناومالي والسنغال"، وما حدث بعد ذلك من العزو المراكشي لهم والذي كان سبب لإنهيار الدولة الإسلامية في هذه المنطقة،ثم يستطرد الكتاب ماحدث من إستكشاف جغرافي لتلك البقعة من إفريقيا وما تلاه من مجيئ الإوربيين لتلك المنطقة، وارقام مفجعة لتجارة الرقيق. وينتهي الكتاب بمراحلة إزدهار الإسلام في المنطقة خلال القرن التاسع عشر.
