اعتمدت الرواية السرد بما فيه من وصفٍ وحوارٍ وصراعٍ بين الشخصيات وما احتوى عليه ذلك من تأزم وجدل وتغذيةٍ للأحداث. وتشعبت الحبكة وغاصت في غموضٍ يتكشّف تباعاً عُقب قراءة الفصول، حيث تتطور الأحداث وتتبلور الأهداف فيدور القارئ في فلك الوبّاص ( الملك الصارم ) وفلك شيحان ( الفارس الحازم )؛ ويكون لكلٍّ من هذين البطلين موقف وقضية، ويحتدمُ الصراع بينهما على أسوار أكبر مدينةٍ وأكبر حصنٍ في منطقة ( رأس الخيل ) وهي منطقة غنيّة بالخيرات والثروات، توزّعت مدنها الكبيرة وقبائلها على شكل رأس خيل، فبدأت جنوباً بمدينةٍ كبيرة كفم الحصان، واستقرّ بعض المدن في الوسط كالعينين بينها مدينة تشكّلت كنجمةٍ بيضاء في جبهة حصانٍ أملح، وانتشرت باقي المدن والغابات الكثيفة فيها شمالًا كغُرة الفرس.
بُنيت الرواية على ثيمتي الحرب والحب بحبكةٍ متقنة وأُثريت بالرموز والحركات؛ كمثلِ ( شجرة النذيرة ) التي فقدت هيبتها وربيعها وتشبّثت بقايا جذورها الواهنة قمةَ جبلٍ أشم ، كانت تلك الشجرةُ الجرداء رمزاً وعنواناً للوحدة والوفاق، فحلّت عليها اللعنة وأضحت سبباً في الفراق، إلى أن عَلِقَ منديلٌ أحمر بأحد أغصانها فبدأت بعده الآمال تتعلّق، وأصبح نبراساً للعاشقين والطامحين في دروب التغيير.
