علم القوافي من العلوم المهمة، التي أرسى قواعدها الخليل بن احمد الفراهيدي، وألحقه بعلم العروض، فكانا من العلوم التي ولدت ناضجة أو شبه مكتملة؛ فاقتصر التأليف فيهما على التكرار، وندرت المؤلفات التي نزعت في كتابتها إلى التجديد أو التغيير. وترجع أهمية الكتاب إلى أنه يطرح علم القوافي بطريقة مختلفة متميزة، حاولت أن تصوغ هذا العلم، وتقدمه بشيء من التجديد؛ فهو يمثل اتجاها لا نقع على ما يماثله في كتب القوافي، فقد أضاف إليه مسائل ومصطلحات جديدة لا نجدها في سواه من كتب هذا العلم. وهو من الكتب النادرة التي كانت قابعة في مجاهل النسيان، وكشفت عنه المصادفة البحتة. كما أنه يمثل بيئة قلما وقعت عليها انظار المحققين؛ فهو كتاب فريد يختلف كثيرا عن مجمل ما كتب في هذا العلم الجليل، ومع ذلك لم يذكر في مؤلفات هذا العلم، وهو جدير بالذكر لما تفرد به عن سواه. ويقدم الكتاب مؤلفا متميزا ذا عقلية حرة ورأي مستقل يتبدى ذلك في طريقة عرضه وجرأة آرائه، وكثرة إضافاته من دون أن يتعرض إلى خلاف أو اختلاف. ومع ذلك كله بقي ابن الفرخان مؤلفا مغمورا، لم يشتهر اسمه.
