في خليج مالح يبدأ من أقصى جنوب بلاده ولا ينتهي بالمحيط الهندي ولا البحر العربي، ظهر منشغلاً في الآخر الذي فيه. ولسنين طويلة تعلم التعايش مع الألم في أسفل ظهره ومنذ جاء إلى الدنيا بكى كما يبكي حديث الولادة. وفي السادسة من عمره ولسبب لا يذكرهُ سمع صوتاً يُحدثه عن مكاسب العيش شريطة أن يكون الإنسان وحيداً.
تصوّر نفسه غريباً ومنعزلاً عن الآخرين. مضت سنون وسنون وهو لا يعرف للتقدم سبيلا. تارة يظن أنه الأفضل وتارة أخرى لا يرى أنه قد تجاوز البداية. كان واقفاً عند الجانب الأيمن من الباخرة ينظر إلى البحر متأملاً وهو يفكر في نفسه: "كيف يتحمل الإنسان هذا العقل وذاك الجهل؟".
ومثل التصرف في الحياة الخاصة كان يعيد قراءة الإرشادات والقوانين والأعراف البحرية الدولية ويسجل ملاحظاته عن العمل والخرائط التي يمُرُّ بها. حتى معاشرته العميقة لنفوس البحّارة كتبها بأدق تفاصيلها.
"هل يجد المتعة في تدوين ورسم خطوط تفاصيل إبحاره؟". أحياناً تجده بعيداً عن الناس وانشغالات الواقع وأحياناً تراه متعباً يترنح من جدار إلى جدار تعتصره الظنون ولا منفذ له من الحياة إلّا الحياة نفسها. دون هوادة مثقلاً بالأمل أفكاره جنون. ركب البحر ـ وهو يعلم في الكتابة حياته وفي القراءة حياة أخرى ـ عمل بجد ونشاط عاليين ولم ينتبه للوقت. له غاية يتخيلها ستحدث قريباً وهو يشدُّ على نفسه رباط الالتزام والانتباه لكل إشارة قد تظهر من هنا أو هناك. مميز نال استحسان الطاقم ورضا الكابتن ورئيس المهندسين، إلّا أنه واجه بعض الصعوبات عند المرافئ في الالتزام بالوقت والانضباط وطاعة الأوامر وهذه وحدها عقدة تضاف إلى نوباته المتكررة وهي بالنسبة له لا حل لها، ليس له القدرة على النسيان ولم يعد بحاجة إلى الجري وراء الهواء كما كان في مدينته المختلفة عن المدن المطلة على البحر.
