يقول المؤلف أبو منصور الثعالبي في بداية الكتاب: إن هذا الكتاب خفيف الحجم، ثقيل الوزن، كبير الغنم، في الكنايات عما يُستهجن ذكره ويُستقبح نشره، أو يُستحيا من تسميته، أو يُتطير منه أو يسترفع ويصان عنه، بألفاظ مقبولة تؤدي المعنى وتفصح عن المغزى، وتحسن القبيح، وتلطف الكثيف، وتكسوه المعرض الأنيق في مخاطبة الملوك، ومكاتبة المحتشمين، ومذاكرة أهل الفضل، ومحاورة ذوي المروءة والظرف، فيحصل المراد ويلوح النجاح مع العدول، عما ينبو عنه السمع، ولا يأنس به الطبع إلى ما يقوم مقامه، وينوب منابه من كلام تأذن له الأذن ولا يحجبه القلب، وما ذلك إلا من البيان في النفوس وخصائص البلاغة ونتائج البراعة ولطائف الصناعة.
والباب الأول من هذا الكتاب في الكناية عن النساء والحُرم وما يجري معهن ويتصل بذكرهن، والباب الثاني في ذكر الغلمان ومن يقول بهم والكناية عن أوصافهم، والباب الثالث في الكناية عن بعض فصول الطعام وعن المكان المهيأ له، والباب الرابع في الكناية عن المقابح والعاهات، والباب الخامس في الكنايات عن المرض والشيب والكبر والموت، والباب السادس فيما يوجبه الوقت والحال من الكناية عن الطعام والشراب، والباب السابع في فنون شتى من الكناية والتعريض مختلف الترتيب.
