إن قيمة كتاب "المنفردات والوحدان" لمسلم بن الحجاج تتلخص في: أولاً: تحقيق القول في تفرد رجل بالرواية عن رجل آخر حين الخلاف على ذلك بين الأئمة الناقدين بإعتبار أن مسلماً صاحب مدرسة في الحفظ والنقد مما سيكون لرأيه في إنهاء هذا الخلاف وزن وثقل شأنه في ذلك شأن البخاري - وإن كان باع البخاري في هذا الشأن كبير، وقد أدرك ذلك ابن حجر وغيره، فراحوا يحيلون في التهذيب وغيره إلى "منفردات" مسلم كما سبق الإشارة إليه وكما سيأتي أيضاً إن شاء الله؛ ثانياً: تقرير القول في تفرد رجل عن غيره فيما يراه مسلم دون غيره من أقرانه في هذا الشأن، ثالثاً: ذهب مسلم في كتابه هذا إلى أبعد من هذا الصنيع بحيث جعل الكتاب فعلاً كتاب معرفة أيضاً بأحوال الرجال، رابعاً: يعد كتابه هذا مصدراً من مصادر فض الخلاف على بعض الرجال المختلف على أسمائهم تصحيفاً أو تحريفاً أو قلباً أو غير ذلك؛ خامساً يعد كتاب "منفردات مسلم" هذا مصدراً في تعريف بعض الأحوال التاريخية كظروف يقتضيها واقع التعريف بالرجل وهي مهمة جداً ولا يقدرها إلا العارفون بهذا الفن.
وقد قام المؤلف بوضع فهارس عامة تشمل الأحاديث في الكتاب وتراجم الأعلام حتى يأخذ الكتاب قدره من التصنيف والتحقيق بصورة قيمة.
