إن منهاج الفيلسوف أو منهاجه أجدر من كل العناصر الأخرى باهتمام من يؤلف في الفلسفة، وبالأخص المؤرخ للفلسفة، لأن جوهر عمله هو أن يعنى، إلى جانب شرحه لأفكار الفلاسفة ونظرياتهم، بإبراز طرائق التفلسف، هاته الطرائف التي بعد أن كانت من جوهر الفكر الفلسفي تزايد، مع مر الأيام في العصر الحديث، تفاضي الدارسين عنها. ولذا خصص الدارس قسم من هذا البحث الذي هو أطروحة قدمها لنيل الدكتوراه، خصصه للمنهاج الفلسفي ليبين مكانته عند الفلاسفة من جهة، ومدى غيابه أو إهماله عند مؤرخي الفلسفية من جهة أخرى، واقفاً عند كل واحد من المناهج الفلسفية ليفصل القول فيه غير قاصد الإحاطة بكل جوانبه وأوجه استعماله. وقد قسم البحث إلى قسمين: الأول في بيان المناهج الفلسفية، الثاني ينحصر في دراسة الطريقة التي ينبغي أن يكتب بها تاريخ الفلسفة، أي ما كان الموضوع العام لهذه الأطروحة.
