تدور أحداث هذه الرواية بين مصر والسعودية، حيث أن البطل خريج حديث من إحدى الكليات النظرية بجامعة القاهرة، والذي ظل يبحث عن عملاً في بلده مصر فترة زمنية ليست بالقليلة وقرر بعد هذا الفراغ الطويل والبحث عن الذات أن يخرج من بلده مسافرًا إلى بلاد الخليج حيث أن ما يسمعه عنهم غير ما شاهده هناك، وطوال أحداث الرواية يقص علينا معاناة البطل في الغربة بل ومعاناة أغلب المصريين هناك ونظرة الأهل والأصحاب لهم عند العودة وما لا يعلمون عنهم في غربتهم، وأظهر أيضا مشكلة المغترب في البحث عن شريكة العمر وكيف للمغترب الذي يعود إلى بلاده شهرين أو ثلاث أن يلتقى بزوجة تشاركه باقي العمر، ومع كل يومًا يمر به في الغربة كان يكتشف كم هي معاناة المغترب داخل وطنه وخارجها، فكانت الرواية صورة مصغرة لمن يريد أن يعلم ما هي الغربة قبل قرار السفر من البداية
