لقد أراد مرلو- بونتي من هذا الكتاب توجيه القارئ إلى مجالٍ لم تسمح له عادات تفكيره بدخوله. أراد إقناع القارئ بأن المفاهيم الأساسية في الفلسفة الحديثة (مثل التمييز بين الذات والموضوع، أو بين الجوهر والحدث، أو بين الوجود والعدم ومثل الوعي والصورة والشيء) هي مفاهيم كثيرة الاستعمال ولكنها تتطلب تجديد الجهد في تأويل العالم، وليس لها أن تدّعي نُبلاً خاصاً عندما نواجه تجاربنا، بحثاً فيها عن المعنى.
لقد أصبح من الضرورة إعادة النظر في ما يبدو مسلماً به، وهو ما لا يتحقق من دون انطلاقٍ جديد للتفكير الفلسفي ومن دون مسارات جديدة يرسمها.
