يصنف علم البصمات من العلوم الطبيعية " العلمية " وهذه العلوم تمتاز بالثبات إلى حد كبير ــ على العكس من العلوم الإنسانية التي تتسم بالتطور والتغير مع تطور المجتمعات المعاصرة، إضافة إلى أن البصمات من خصائصها الثبات وعدم قابليتها للتغير أو التعديل. ومن هنا فإن التطور في ميدان علم البصمات لا يعني التطور في البصمه نفسها بل يقصد به إدخال التقنية الحديثة في التعامل مع البصمات من خلال اكتشاف أجهزة جديدة ووسائل حديثة تسهل عملية التعامل مع البصمات ومعالجتها من الناحية التقنية البحتة، بمعنى الوصول إلى تقنيات تسهل البحث والكشف عن مواقع البصمات في مسرح الجريمة وتيسير التقاطها وتظهيرها وإدخالها إلى الأجهزة المحوسبة وسهولة الرجوع إليها ومطابقتها وغير ذلك من الأمور العملية التي تقوم بها الأجهزة ذات الاختصاص. كما يندرج ضمن التطورات الحديثة في علم البصمات انتباه الكثير من الدول في الوقت الحاضر إلى أهمية هذا العلم في مجال تحقيق الشخصية واعتباره من الوسائل الفاعلة في هذا المجال للسيطرة على النواحي الأمنية من خلال أخذ انطباعات الأشخاص الذين يدخلون إقليمها سواء كان ذلك في المطارات أم في الحدود البرية أم في الموانئ البحرية، ليسهل الرجوع إليها عند ارتكاب الجرائم واكتشاف مرتكبيها. علاوة على هذا الاهتمام قامت العديد من السلطات في دول العالم ــ ومنها عدة دول عربية ــ بالتركيز على التأهيل في مجال الأدلة الجنائية من خلال تدريب الكوادر وزيادة معرفتهم في النواحي الأكاديمية، الأمر الذي دعا هذه الحكومات إلى إنشاء الجامعات والمعاهد العليا والأكاديميات التي تعنى بالعلوم الأمنية التي تمنح المؤهلات العلمية العالية والتي تقوم على إدارتها كفاءات مؤهلة تأهيلاً عالياً. ومن هنا ــ وبعد ما يزيد على خمس سنوات من تأليف هذا الكتاب ــ كان من الضروري إعادة النظر في الطبعة الأولى من خلال تنقيحها ورفدها بالعديد من الرسومات والأشكال التوضيحية والمعلومات التي قد تعمل على إيصال الأفكار الموجودة في طياته.
