لقد حرفت العامة الألفاظ العربية عن موضعها وتكلمت بها عيى غيرها تكلمت به العرب، فكان من الواجب تصحيحها وإزالة التحريف منها، وتقويم اللسان لكي يلفظها كما لفظت بها العرب، وقد أورد مؤلف هذا الكتاب جميع ما لحن فيه عامة زمانه، وبين ما وقع في كلامهم من السهو والغلط وجعل مدار حديثه على ما ألفه الزبيدي من كتب وبين ما وقع في كلامه من السهو والغلط والشطط كما ذكر أوهام ابن مكي في كتابه المسمى بـ "تثقيف اللسان وتلقيح الجنان" والكتاب في الأصل مخطوطة في نسختين الأول عنوانها كتاب الرد على الزبيدي في لحن العوام والثانية عنوانها المدخل إلى تقويم اللسان وتعليم البيان، وقد اعتمد المحقق النسخة الثانية فقام باستدراك الألفاظ الساقطة من نسخة الأصل، ووضع زيادات هذه النسخة بين قوسين مربعين من غير إشارة إلى ذلك كما ألحق صوراً لصفحة العنوان وللصفحتين الأولى والأخيرة من كلتا النسختين.
