يقول الدكتور جاد طه مؤلف الكتاب في المقدمة: شاءت الظروف أن أسافر إلى كل من ألمانيا الاتحادية وألمانيا الديمقراطية سنويا تقريبًا منذ عام 1985، ففي ذلك العام اشتركت في مؤتمر مؤرخي العالم في مدينة شتوتجارت في ألمانيا الاتحادية، وفي العالم التالي سافرت إلى مدينة ليبزج بألمانيا الديمقراطية وعملت أساذًا زائرًا بجامعتها...
ثم يصف محتوى الكتاب فيقول: وقد تناولت في الفصل التمهيدي من هذا الكتيب أصل الألمان، وقيام الدول الألمانية المتعاقبة، كما أنني في الفصل الأول عالجت موضوع ألمانيا والإصلاح الديني البروتستنتي، وخصصت الفصل الثاني لإعطاء صورة لحرب الثلاثين عامًا في ألمانيا والتي دمرتها تدميرًا امتدت آثاره نحو قرنين كاملين، أما الفصل الثالث من هذا الكتيب فهو عن قيام الاتحاد الألماني وقيام الإمبراطورية الألمانية 1871، وعالج الفصل الرابع موضوع ألمانيا والحرب العالمية الأولى، وقدم الفصل الخامس صورة لفلسفة النازية ودور ألمانيا في قيام الحرب العالمية الثانية، أما الفصل الأخير فقد عنونته " ألمانيا.. إلى أين المصير " باعتبار أن المتغيرات الدولية المعاصرة صارت تسير بطريقة مذهلة من ناحية سرعة تلك المتغيرات، بحيث صار المؤرخون يلهثون وراء الأحداث ولا يستطيعون ملاحقتها وتلحليلها.
