تطرح مسألة تأصيل تجربة الفكر العربي إشكالية تتطلب إعمال الفكر وبذل الجهد لتجاوزها والمؤلف يتتبع في هذه المقالات التي يضمها هذا الكتاب مسار الفكر العربي في تجربته التاريخية الممتدة من عصر التنزيل إلى عصر التقنية والكتاب يتألف من ثلاثة أقسام: القسم الأول (مراكب لكل فصول) يقدم نظرة تحليلية للتجربة الثقافية العربية في أبعادها الدينية كما تمثلها أعمال عدد من المفكرين.
كما بحث هذا القسم في المنطلقات النظرية للتجربة الفكرية العربية في اتجاهها نحو التحديث والتحرر من سطوة الأسطورة والخرافة. أما القسم الثاني (مراكب إغريقية) فيبحث في انعكاسات انفتاح العقل العربي على علوم الأولين وهي علوم نافعة في بناء العالم وتشكيله علمياً ومادياً وإنسانياً. فلقد كانت حركة الترجمة والنقل خطوة جبارة قادت إلى الانفتاح على الكون والوجود.
أما القسم الثالث من الكتاب (كراكب الحداثة) فهو مبحث في مكانة التراث في حاضرنا وعلاقته ببدايات الفكر الحديث، حيث يشير الكاتب إلى أن الإسلام والغرب والحداثة والمستقبل العربي تحتل المكانة المركزية في النظر وفي الاهتمام وفي التفكر.
