اللغات هي الشعوب؛ لأنها سجلُّ تراثها، وما تنطوي عليه أفئدتها من مشاعر، وأخيلتها من صور، وعقولها من فِكَر. وقد عني هذا الكتاب ببيان علاقة اللغة بالثقافة؛ ليُظهر خطرها، ومكانها من العقل والهوية، وأن ما تلاقي العربية اليوم من كيد، وتجنٍّ، وما يُشنُّ عليها من غارات، من أغراضه محو ذواكر العرب، وطمس هويتهم؛ إذ كان الاعتداد بالهوية هو الذي يُبنَى عليه الشعور بالتميز، والتأبي على التذويب، والاستتباع، ومتى طمست الهوية، حلَّ محلَّ ذلك الشعور والتأبي نزوع إلى مماثلة الغالب، التماسا للكمال، وتعويضا عن النقص. وبيَّن الكتاب ما ترتب على إدراك مكانة اللغة من الهوية من عناية الشعوب الواعية بلغاتها، وصونها، وتعظيمها، وإنزالها من حياتها أرفع المنازل، ووازن بين ذلك وما يفعل العرب اليوم بالعربية.
