على أن هذا الكتاب لا يزعم لنفسه أنه تاريخ للموسيقى ، أو انه عرض عام للفلسفة وهو قبل هذا كله لا يدعى على الإطلاق أنه دراسة فنية لعلم الموسيقى وإنما الغرض من هذا الكتاب هو تقديم عرض تاريخي لأصول التفكير الجمالي في الموسيقى وتطوره في الحضارة الغربية. ومن رأى المؤلف أن جذور التفكير الجمالي في الموسيقى الغربية ترجع إلى أمفلاطون، وأن كتابات هذا الفيلسوف اليوناني ما زال لها تأثيرها الواضح في الموسيقى حتى يومنا هذا.
