الهدف من هذا الكتاب باختصار هو تناول- وإلي حد ما- اكتشاف الإقليم الفاصل بين علم الطبيعة والفلسفة فهذا الإقليم الذي اعتدنا أن نعتبره سخيفاً جداً، أصبح فجأة مثيراً جداً، وهاماً، نتيجة للتطورات الحديثة في الفيزياء النظرية.
إن الإثارة الجديدة تتجاوز بكثير المشاكل المتخصصة للفيزياء والفلسفة، وتصل إلي مسائل تمس الحياة الإنسانية عن قرب شديد كمسائل المادية والإدارة الحرة، لذلك آمل أن يثير الكتاب اهتمام الكثيرين ممن لا يشتغلون بالفيزياء أو الفلسفة، ولهذا الغرض جعلت المناقشة يسيرة قدر الإمكان متجنباً النقط المتخصصة ما وسعنى، وحيث لم أتمكن شرحت هذه النقط، كما حاولت أن أرتب الكتاب بحيث تهيئ قراءة الفصلين الاولين مع الفصل الأخير، نظرة عامة مفهومة للقضية الرئيسية، وخلاصة لكل الفصول، وهناك كثير من القراء سيفضلون البدء بهذه الفصول الثلاثة.
ولا حاجة لي لكي أضيف أنى بالنسبة للفلسفة من الدخلاء، وليس من بين نواياى ان أضع مرجعاً في مسائل الفلسفة الخالصة، وإن شئت أن أختار عنواناً جانبياً لكتابى فلعله يكون "تأملات فيزيائى في بعض مشاكل الفلسفة".
