" .. فما أزال أعلِّق ما أستفيده من ألفاظ العلماء، ومن بطون الصحائف، ومن صيد الخواطر التي تنثرها المُناظرات والمقابسات في مجالس العلماء ومجامع الفضلاء، طمعاً في أن يعلق بي طرف من الفضل أبعد به عن الجهل، لعلِّي أصل إلى بعض ما وصل إليه الرجال قبلي."

عن الكاتب:
أبي الوفاء علي بن عقيل بن محمد بن عقيل البغدادي الحنبلي.(431-513هـ)
يقول الكاتب: "إني لا يحل لي أن أضيع ساعة من عمري، حتى إذا تعطل لساني عن مذاكرة ومناظرة، وبصري عن مطالعة أعملت فكري في حال راحتي وأنا مستطرح، فلا أنهض إلاَّ وقد خطر لي ما أسطره"..
وقال: "وأنا أقصر بغاية جهدي أوقات أكلي، حتى أختار سف الكعك وتحسيه بالماء على الخبز؛ لأجل ما بينهما من تفاوت المضغ".
عن الكتاب:
قال الحافظ الذهبي في تاريخه: " لم يُصنف في الدنيا أكبر من هذا الكتاب. " ..
قيل أنه بلغ ثمانمئة (800) مجلد!
وقال ابن رجب في ذيل طبقات الحنابلة: « وأكبر تصانيفه : كتاب "الفنون" وهو كتاب كبير جدًا ، فيه فوائد كثيرة جليلة ، في الوعظ ، والتفسير ، والفقه ، والأصلين ، والنحو ، واللغة ، والشعر ، والتاريخ ، والحكايات. وفيه مناظراته ومجالسه التي وقعت له ، وخواطره ونتائج فكره قَيَّدَها فيه ."
