كتاب الفردية والمجتمع المدني تأليف ديفيد بوز يتحدث عن بعض من ثقافات المجتمع الغربي ويبين أن تراث الحضارة الغربية هو التوسع الدائم في جعل مزيد من الناس يشعرون بكرامتهم. وقد سعى المفكرون الليبرتاريون من خلال الصراع من أجل حرية النفس البشرية وإلغاء الرق وتحرير النساء والأقليات وحرية الأعمال إلى تحقيق كرامة الحرية والمسؤولية لكل فرد. فيبدأ الكتاب بالحديث عن التساوي الطبيعي بين البشر ثم بعدها بحوالي يتحدث كيف كانوا قد استطاعوا ترسيخ هذه المبادئ,طالبوا بتوسيع تطبيقها لتشمل سود البشرة وإلغاء العبودية.ثم بعد إلغاء العبودية تفرغوا للمسائل الاجتماعية الناتجة عن تغيير طرق المعيشة والحضارة. ثم يتحولوا للمشاكل الاقتصادية بسبب ما عانى منه القرن العشرين من أزمات اقتصادية كبرى وتغيير في نظام سندات العملات الورقية. وينتهي الكتاب بمقاله عن العنصرية التي مازال يعانى منها أصحاب البشرة السوداء بسبب الصورة الذهنية السيئة عنهم.
