توفيق حبيب: صحفي ومترجم مصري.
ولد «توفيق حبيب مليكة» في عام ١٨٨٠م في أسرة قبطية وتلقى تعليمًا تقليديًّا كأغلب أقرانه آنذاك.
استهوته الصحافة فعمل مخبرًا صحفيًا في البداية يجمع الأخبار ويسجلها، ثم بدء في كتابة سلسلة مقالات ﺑ «جريدة الأهرام» تحت عنوان «على الهامش» كان يوقعها باسم «الصحافي العجوز»، وقد تميز بأسلوب خاص يجمع بين السخرية والحكمة في أسلوب وعبارات بسيطة.
يعتبرحبيب من أوائل الأقباط المصريين الذين اشتغلوا بالصحافة، وقد ألف العديد من الكتب التي تهتم بأدب الرحلات وتصف أسفاره نذكر منها «شهران في أروبا» و«رحلة إكسبرس من إسكندرية وإستامبول» و«تذكار المؤتمر القبطي» وغيرها.
توفي توفيق حبيب في عام ١٩٤١م عن ستين عامًا قضى أربعين عامًا منها في بلاط صاحبة الجلالة (الصحافة).

يُقدِّم هذا الكتاب وصفًا تاريخيًّا موجزًا لحيِّ «الفجالة» كأحد أبرز أحياء القاهرة القديمة وأكثرها ثراءً تراثيًّا على مرِّ العصور التاريخية، منذ الفتح الإسلامي لمصر وحتى العصر الحديث؛ فقد لاقت الفجالة اهتمامًا كبيرًا من الخلفاء والولاة في شتى الأزمنة، كما تميَّزت بجمال طبيعتها ومنشآتها بما تضمنته من بساتين ومتنزهات وقصور تتسم بالروعة في البناء والتشييد، كما كانت مسرحًا لأحداث تاريخية هامة؛ حيث شهدت أولى المعارك الحربية بين المسلمين والرومان في القرن السابع الميلادي. وقد ظلت الفجالة تنبض بذاكرة الزمان والمكان بما بقي فيها حتى الآن من الآثار الخالدة، متضمنة العديد من الكنائس والمدارس والجمعيات المسيحية بمختلف طوائفها، فضلًا عن المقاهي الثقافية وأندية الأدباء والمفكرين.
