تحكي الرواية قصة شاب اسمه "ناجي وحيد" تجرّع مرارة الاحتقار و ذاق ويلات الرّفض حتّى لُقّب بالفاشل، عمله الأول كان عامل نظافة، رغم أن مستواه يفوق بكثير منصبه، إلاّ أنّه قبل به فقط خروجا من كابوس الفقر و الحاجة، كذلك من أجل عائلته و خصوصا أمّه المريضة، تمكّن أخيرا من تحسين موقعه في الشّركة بعدما نجح في مسابقة توظيف داخليّ و اقتنص منصب كاتب، تبادرت الشكوك حوله، و بعد فوزه بجائزة أفضل مخطّط خماسي تعرّض لحملة إقصاء من طرف بعض من حسدوه، و لفقت له تهمة فُصل على إثرها من العمل، بفضل تدخل "مكارم ملاك" مسؤولة التوظيف في الشركة، يجد "وحيد" الماء الذي يسبح فيه حرًّا طليقا في الشّركة الجديدة التي احتضنته، شركة والد ملاك، شركة "الغد"، و التي ستمكّنه من تفجير طاقاته الإبداعية ليصل إلى أعلى منصب فيها، فيقود الشركة إلى توحيد و إدماج و شركة "برو وورك'' -و التي طُرد منها سابقا- في شركة "الغد" ، فيكون رده بأن يضع شروطا تقصي الاستغلاليين و تُطهّر الشركة الجديدة الوليدة عن هذا الالتحام من كلّ فساد محتمل، ليبرهن عن خطأ كلّ من حكم عليه قبل أن يدرك حقيقة مستواه، فيكون هو القائد الجديد الذي يريده الكلّ.
