إن كلمة العنصرية شائعة الإستعمال في أيامنا. إنها "النظام الذي يؤكد تفوّق مجموعة اجتماعية على آخرين، ويوصي، بشكل خاص، بعزل هؤلاء داخل بلد (التمييز العنصري) تقوم الشهرة التي تعرفها العنصرية في أيامنا على الفظائع التي ارتكبها النازيون خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية. لكن بالرغم من هزيمة الهتلرية، فإن العنصرية اليوم في موضع إتهام في العديد من أنحاء العالم وينسب إليها الكثير من النزاعات والتوترات: مسألة الزنوج في الولايات المتحدة، "الأبارتايد" في إفريقيا الجنوبية، حالة اليهود في الإتحاد السوفياتي، العلاقات بين المستَعْمَرين والمستعمِرين، بين اليهود والعرب، ردّات الفعل تجاه اليد العاملة المهاجرة التي يعيب عليها البعض بأنها "تأكل خبز الآخرين". تستند الدراسة العلمية للعنصرية التي سنقوم بها إلى تحليل مزدوج: تحليل الوقائع وتحليل الأفكار.
