تناولت الرواية قصة فتاة شابة تدعى " بولين" التي كانت ببساطة لحن نشاز لفظته أوركسترا الحياة على خشبة من رماد في زمن الحقد والسواد، فغدت أيامه بين بني جنسه كالغريب بين السراب والضباب...حياة بلا عنوان، وقلوب بلا أوتار، ومعزوفات بلا ألحان...وتلكم هي القاعدة في خشبة التكرار والدوران.
صوفيا، ليندة، قاسم...أشباح شاءت لها الأقدار أن تدق آخر المسامير بلا وازع من حس أو ضمير.
حنين، زهرة، ياسمين، الراعي الصغير...أرواح تسعى لتأخير وقت الرحيل، وتمسح الغبار عن وجه لحن صدأ لعله يبتسم لصورته الشّاحبة قبل رش عطره الأسود الجميل.
العائلة هي العالم الوحيد الذي لاتمطر فيه السماء حقدا، أو العالم الذي لايجب أن تمطر فيه، لكن ماذا لو أمطرت؟
