نظر راغب إلى يد الحكيم المدني الممدودة وتذكر يد الحكيم الفارسي حينما كان يدعوه إلى الخمر، فلم يتردد هذه المرة، ورغم شعوره بالعجز والخجل والحيرة والاضطراب مد يده ليد الحكيم وتشابكت الأيدي، وبدأ يحاول تقليد حركاته وخطواته، ولكنه شعر كأن قالبا من الجليد يحيط بصدره وقيدا من الحديد يحيط بقدمه، وتمنى لو تنهمر أشعة الشمس على الجليد فيذوب وأن تنهال مطارق الحديد على القيد فيزول، ولكن الأمنيتين لم تتحققا، ولاحظ أن حركات الحكيم تلقائية وحركاته متكلفة، وخطوات الحكيم رشيقة و خطواته ثقيلة، ودوران الحكيم كان طبيعيا و دورانه كان اصطناعيا، فكف عن المحاولة، و أدرك الحكيم المدني ما يعانيه فأرسل يده حتى لا يثقل عليه واستمر هو في ما بدأ فيه.
