يقول المؤلف سيد البحراوي في مقدمة الكتاب، واصفًا محتواه: إن القارئ القريب من علم العروض قد لا يحتاج إلى تفسير لاهتمامي البالغ بهذه المخطوطة. فأبو الحسن سعيد بن مسعدة (الأخفش الأوسط) قد توفي في أوائل القرن الثالث الهجري (إما 211 أو 215 أو 221هـ)؛ أي بعد وفاة الخليل بن أحمد بنحو نصف قرن، وقد عاصره، لأنه وإن كان تلميذ تلميذه سيبويه، إلا أنه كان أسن من سيبويه. وقد شاع عن الأخفش أنه قد خالف سيبويه والخليل في كثير من مسائل النحو، والعروض. وأشهر ما يشاع عنه انه قد استدرك على الخليل وزنًا سادس عشر هو المتدارك. وهذا يعني أن أهمية كتاب الأخفش تكمن في كونه أقرب مصدر في العروض إلى الخليل الذي ضاع كتابه في هذا الميدان، بما يعنيه ذلك من إمكانية- تتاح لنا لأول مرة- لفهم الأصول الأولى لهذا العلم من واحد من مؤسسيه، وخصوصًا أن الكتاب الذي نقدمه اليوم، ليس كتابًا في العروض المعتاد كتلك الكتب التي تستعرض بحور الشعر واحدًا واحدًا، بل هو كتاب فيما يمكن أن نسميه أصول علم العروض. غير أن أهمية الكتاب تتجاوز ذلك إلى أمر آخر مهم، وهو أنه يضعنا في قلب المعركة العلمية التي واكبت وضع العروض، والقضايا الخلافية التي كانت مثارة، وكان الأخفش علمًا من أعلامها.
