تحكي القصة عن ذكريات الكاتب في طفولته، وتحديدًا عن علاقة الصداقة التي جمعته بصديقه "طارق". تبدأ القصة عندما كان الكاتب طفلًا في السادسة أو السابعة من عمره يعيش في محافظة البصرة، ويتذكر كيف كان يزور بيت جده ليلتقي بطارق، رغم صعوبة اللقاء بسبب الظروف الأمنية آنذاك (خطف، تفجيرات، غياب الهواتف).
مع الوقت، أصبح اللقاء أسهل عندما انتقل طارق مؤقتًا للسكن قريبًا من بيت الكاتب، فصارت صداقتهما أقوى. لعبوا ألعابًا كثيرة مثل "الغميضة" و"الطبخ في الليل"، وكانوا يستمتعون بالسهر والمزاح، رغم بعض الخلافات والمشاجرات الطفولية التي سرعان ما كانت تنتهي بالصلح.
