وُلِد ووكر — ابن إين براون — بطفرة وراثية شديدة الندرة حتى إن الأطباء يسمونها متلازمة يتيمة؛ إذ ربما لا يوجد سوى ٣٠٠ شخص فقط في العالم مصابين بها. ورغم أن ووكر وصل إلى سن الثالثة عشرة، فقد كان لا يزال يلبس حفاضات الأطفال ولا يمكنه الكلام ويرتدي ما يشبه الأغلال في يديه حتى لا يؤذي نفسه. في كتاب شجيٍّ يأسر القلوب، يستعرض براون عالم البهجة والمعاناة الذي يحيط بحياة ابنه. يقول براون في الكتاب: «أحيانًا تشبه مشاهدة ووكر النظر إلى القمر؛ فأنت ترى وجه رجل في القمر، ولكنك تدرك أنه لا يوجد أي شخص بالفعل هناك، ولكن إذا كان ووكر لا قيمة له، فلمَ يحمل هذا القدر من الأهمية لي؟ وما الذي يحاول أن يريني إياه؟» إن هذا الكتاب المؤلَّف بأسلوب يمزج بين روح الدعابة والصراحة القاسية يستقي إلهامه من حب أبٍ لابنه ومن رغبة كل أب في أن يكون جديرًا بأبنائه.
